Sound the bugle, Critical Animals is calling for proposals for the 2010 festival.

Applications close Wednesday 31 March.

Critical Animals is the creative research arm of This is Not Art, held each October in Newcastle, NSW. We welcome proposals for papers, panels, presentations, performances, exhibits, installations and happenings. The symposium is interdisciplinary and unthemed – it is an opportunity to present research material and creative practice with the thought to generating discussion and collaboration. In particular we look for artists that engage with creative research, challenge their medium or reflect upon their practice.

Please distribute this callout to any artists, researchers, writers, students, performers, academics and thinkers – anyone who’s critically engaged in creative and experimental art practices.

Download proposal info and guidelines here or here.

Open Fields 2010 is now calling for submissions.

This inaugural unthemed academic camp will be held at the University of Technology, Sydney, and Serial Space Gallery, April 28-30, 2010.

It has been our intention to create a virtually limitless forum harbouring the inner excitations of academics, researchers, students, artists and practitioners. By allowing themes, tangents, or circles of thought to appear organically, Open Fields is an ideal opportunity for presentations, engagements, and collaborations that are experimental, obscure and uncompromised.

We encourage you to present your thought, work in progress, or to present on the work of another in the spirit of creativity, stimulation, and cross-pollination. This may take the form of an exhibition, installation, paper, presentation, performance, recital, round-table discussion, seminar, or any combination you feel appropriate.

The camp will feature self-catering, a program of nightly performances and events at Serial Space, and the Rizzeria zine machine.

For more information, visit: openfieldssydney.wordpress.com

To apply, find our application form here.

Admire the poster, here.

Applications close 31 January, 2010.

Registration for contributors and attendees will open in February, 2010.

Feel free to email us with any queries at: openfields2010@gmail.com

Godspeed,

Calling all Steinians,

To coincide with Stein 09 festivities, Critical Animals is hosting a public reading of Gertrude Stein’s Stanzas In Meditation in its entirety. The continuous audition of the work will be an act of criticism emphasising certain of its essential qualities: its music, its process, that it is a monument, and that it creates an environment.

The event will feature several revered Animals – Penny Duff, Stu Hatton, Derek Motion, Michael Farrell, Ella O’Keefe, Jal Nicholl – and, possibly, yourself. This is an open event; all audience and passersby are invited to take part in the collective reading as they please. If you’re interested, let us know at criticalanimals@gmail.com or simply turn up on the day.

Friday 2 October

2.30 – 5.30pm

Civic Park

To mark the end of Critical Animals we are holding Diversity Dinners on Sunday 4 October, an event to bring people, food and stories together. This should be a lovely opportunity to debrief on the festival, as well as take part in a very thoughtful piece of art. An installation that unfolds in situ, the dinner will also be recorded and in turn become a reflective audio work.

Emma Konnaris is the mind and the stomach behind the concept of Diversity Dinners. She is a young artist operating out of a too-small studio. When she’s not creating art, she’s subtly force-feeding friends and family members.

Click here for invite and details.

Places are limited, so be sure to RSVP to emma_konnaris@hotmail.com by Saturday 26 September, and tell her what dish you intend to bring!

The notions of boundaries, or lack of, when it comes to sex and gender. Engaging with both artists and academics we seek to understand the fine lines between stereotypes, freedoms, passivity and defiance. Promising furious lashings of ‘non PC’ thought, we vividly engage with the bizarre society we are told is ‘the norm’.

Fri 2 Oct: 2.00 – 2.30pm

Civic Park

Launch of Fiona Lee’s Ring I brick installation in Civic Park. A minimalist, site-specific installation which subtly juxtaposes ideas around place-making and consumerism. Using reclaimed kiln bricks arranged in the timeless symbol of a circle, Ring I aims to invoke an ethereal appreciation of the fragility of our environment and to define the surroundings in which it is placed. In its position within the soil we can recognise the circle as an object of nature and a framework we use to understand and describe our world.
