Critical Animals seeks new Directors!

It’s true, we’re on the lookout for two new Directors for the 2011 and 2012 festivals. We hope that our new Directors will be able to attend this year’s This is Not Art and Critical Animals.

The position description can be found here. Applications are due by 1 September.

If you know any interested artists, creators, organisers, academics, students, polymaths, multitaskers or lateral thinkers, please point them in our direction.

Crack Theatre Festival seeks new co-director

The Crack Theatre Festival is seeking a Co-Director for the 2010 and 2011 festivals. Crack is a national festival and forum for emerging and experimental performing artists. Over four days, Crack presents a series of panels, workshops and performances showcasing the breadth and diversity of Australian performing arts practice.

The festival takes place annually in October as part of This Is Not Art, Australia’s largest media arts festival. It is held in Newcastle, NSW, along with Electrofringe, National Young Writers Festival, Critical Animals and Sound Summit.

Crack is looking for a creative, energetic and highly organised individual to work with current festival co-directors David Finnigan and Gillian Schwab. 2010 dates are 30 September – 4 October.

Submissions for 2010 have closed

The gate has shut and the yard is littered with ideas, plans, suggestions and elaborate schemes. We now have the task of sifting through the mail, of picking apart the various projects, papers, presentations, performances, exhibitions and installations that people have proposed. This, for us, is the good part.

As for you, if you were gracious enough to submit an application, you’ll receive confirmation of this by the end of the week.

After that, it’s the waiting game. Go for a walk, or learn a new instrument. We’ll be in touch if we require more information about your proposal, but otherwise, we’ll be notifying artists about their proposals in early June.

If you indicated an interest in being involved in the symposium but didn’t submitted a proposal, we’ll be in contact to discuss how you might fit into the vast and complex machine that is Critical Animals.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a proposal, or who flagged their interest in being involved in this year’s festival.

Due to overwhelming demand and public protest, we are extending our deadline for submissions for the 2010 festival to:

We already have an inbox brimming with incredible proposals, but because we understand that people (a) forget, (b) get sidetracked, (c) fail to prioritise effectively, and (d) are lazy, we present you this amnesty.

Sound the bugle, Critical Animals is calling for proposals for the 2010 festival.

Applications close Wednesday 31 March.

Deadline for applications extended to WEDNESDAY 14 APRIL

Critical Animals is the creative research arm of This is Not Art, held each October in Newcastle, NSW. We welcome proposals for papers, panels, presentations, performances, exhibits, installations and happenings. The symposium is interdisciplinary and unthemed – it is an opportunity to present research material and creative practice with the thought to generating discussion and collaboration. In particular we look for artists that engage with creative research, challenge their medium or reflect upon their practice.

Please distribute this callout to any artists, researchers, writers, students, performers, academics and thinkers – anyone who’s critically engaged in creative and experimental art practices.

Open Fields Conference

Open Fields 2010 is now calling for submissions.

This inaugural unthemed academic camp will be held at the University of Technology, Sydney, and Serial Space Gallery, April 28-30, 2010.

It has been our intention to create a virtually limitless forum harbouring the inner excitations of academics, researchers, students, artists and practitioners. By allowing themes, tangents, or circles of thought to appear organically, Open Fields is an ideal opportunity for presentations, engagements, and collaborations that are experimental, obscure and uncompromised.

We encourage you to present your thought, work in progress, or to present on the work of another in the spirit of creativity, stimulation, and cross-pollination. This may take the form of an exhibition, installation, paper, presentation, performance, recital, round-table discussion, seminar, or any combination you feel appropriate.

The camp will feature self-catering, a program of nightly performances and events at Serial Space, and the Rizzeria zine machine.
